Welcome U12A Brant Battalion Participants
Brant Battalion 2024/25 U12A Tryouts
05/04/2024

Dear Players and Parents,

I want to thank you for participating in our tryouts and being part of this inaugural season for the Brant Battalion. The amalgamation of these great organizations gives our players the opportunity to compete at a higher level and come together as a community.

I would like to start by introducing myself, my name is Josh Speagle and I am looking forward to coaching the U12A Brant Battalion team for the 2024/25 season. Hockey has been a passion of mine for many years and I am honoured to have the opportunity to be behind the bench with such a great group!

My coaching philosophy revolves around cultivating a passion for hockey within each player. The primary goal is to continually support each player's love of the game while fostering individual skill development and teamwork. I aim to create a positive team culture where communication and discipline thrive. On the ice, the objectives include enhancing players' technical skills, strategic understanding of the game, and systems-based play. Off the ice, the focus is on instilling life skills such as leadership, time management, and resilience.

Ultimately, success is measured not just by wins but by the holistic growth of each player, both as skilled athletes and well-rounded individuals prepared for success beyond the hockey arena.

Get ready to showcase your skills, determination, and passion for the game. Remember, success on the ice is earned through hard work and dedication. Give it your all, leave everything on the ice, and let's strive for greatness together.

I am expecting players to show up at tryouts properly prepared, both mentally, physically, and with their full gear including mouthguards.

In addition to the fundamentals of skating, shooting, speed, and hockey sense, I will be looking for players who demonstrate the following characteristics:

Dedication
Hard work
Focus
Coachability
Teamwork
Sportsmanship

The first day of tryouts will consist of individual skills including forward/backward skating, skating with the puck, stopping/pivoting/transitions, and shooting in motion.

The second day will continue with individual skills focusing on tight turns, agility, acceleration with the puck, passing/receiving, and skating with the puck.

The plan for the third day will be to run a quick warm-up, some short duration skill drills, and jump into an inter-squad game.

As you can see on the schedule, the first day is the only separated group session. Day two and three will be the full group on the ice together.   First releases will happen after the third tryout, while subsequent releases will occur after the exhibition and/or additional inter-squad games.

Please ensure you sign in with the desk staff when you get to the arena tomorrow for your ice time, the staff will provide you with a unique number to track your progress through tryouts on the website.

Best of luck to each and every one of you. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the arena tomorrow.

Coach Speagle
